God really cares about the small people!

This week you may have come across the unfortunate remark made by the BP Chairman in America when he said that although BP are a very large oil company "we care about the small people." Although it was clearly meant with the best intentions it came across as rather patronising and angered many who had been horribly affected by the terrible oil spill in the Gulf.

It really didn't wash - big and powerful (and everything that has happened) don't seem to easily fit with caring for small people.

When we were praying together on Friday, we used Psalm 68 as the basis for a couple of our sessions. There we discover how big and powerful God is: 'When you went out before your people, O God ... the earth shook.' God is shown to be all-powerful, able to 'crush the heads of his enemies.'

Could He really 'care about the small people?'

Well, in this psalm, mixed in with all this big talk we have some of the most amazing statements about God being 'a father to the fatherless, a defender of widows ... God sets the lonely in families ... From your bounty O God you provided for the poor.'

Almighty God cares deeply for each of us 'small people.'

How do we really know?

God sent His Son to become a small person and as a small person he 'humbled Himself and became obedient to death, even the death on the cross' so that small people like us could have our sins forgiven and have a restored relationship with God. Hallelujah!
