Why bother with Lent?
Jesus said we are to 'take up our cross daily and follow Him.' Whatever he was advocating was not a weekly, or a monthly or a very occasional occurence - it was daily!
How much of our Christian walk is of a daily nature? We may go to church once a week - but not daily. Small groups - again not daily. So clearly the church must be failing in not putting on something every day!
No - there are certain things that each of us needs to get into the daily practice of doing - 'taking up our cross.' But what on earth does it mean?
The cross was the place where ambition ended and where hope died. You could not plan for life beyond this as there was a finality and a certainty about the outcome.
Are you prepared to make this your daily attitude and outlook on life:
"Lord I have no future except what you bring me. I have no plans today other than the desire to walk in your will. I have no ambition other than to love you with all my heart and to serve you today with all my strength. I acknowledge this day as a gift from you and will live it for your ends and for your glory as if it was the only day I have left on this earth."
Part of our Lent readings is about establishing a daily discipline of focusing on God and seeking to be closer to Him as we take this journey together towards the celebration of Jesus' death and resurrection at Easter-time.
So tomorrow is Monday - what will you do with it? Who will you live it for?
