On Tuesday as part of my computing job, I had to go to Holland to visit a football club there, PSV Eindhoven. For you anoraks, Ruud van Nistelroy was there before he signed for Man Utd and there were quite a few pictures of him at their training ground.
I was going to meet someone from another company at Amsterdam airport who'd introduced us to PSV. I had some clear instructions as to where to meet him but anyway we had each other's mobile numbers. We were due to land at roughly the same time, but the instructions he had given me didn't make any sense so I just went through passport control knowing I could phone him. Unfortunately my (new) phone failed to 'roam' and wouldn't pick up a signal. We were unable to make contact. After a brief (but extreme!) panic period, I contacted an information desk and they put out an announcement over the whole airport and as a result we made contact. Actually he was only about 100 metres away in the end!
I had assumed that my phone would work in Holland. When I phoned my network provider later, we agreed that I had every right to assume the phone would work (as I was with the same company and had the same number) but that I should have checked before I went.
What assumptions are you making this morning with you and God? Do you assume that just because you come to church that's all there is. An hour or so a week of God is what being a Christian is all about.
Use this morning to check things out. Check out your salvation. Check out your ongoing Christian walk. Don't assume.
